Brian's trip to Norfolk Island

A visit to Norfolk Island has always been on my wish list. Thanks to Norfolk Select I travelled to the island in June 2016. Temperatures there range from 23 - 28C, so never too cold or too hot! Air New Zealand operate direct flights from Sydney and Brisbane and it only took 2.5 hours to get there. My first impressions...very green with not much to do. Boy was I wrong!

We collected our car rentals on arrival at Norfolk Island Airport and headed to Castaway Resort.  This is a lovely family run hotel in the main street.  Pepsi the dog was always there to greet us and have a play. We had the opportunity to inspect many other accommodation options and found a great selection from budget-friendly to stunning cliff-top home rentals.

It is so easy to get around the island by car.  Beware - everyone waves to you, so one hand on the steering wheel, the other on standby for a passing local! And don’t forget to give way to the cows!  We did some great walks through the National Parks and coastal areas with a local guide. There are no snakes or nasty things on this island, and the scenery was just so green and amazing!

World Heritage Kingston was the first settlement and you can visit some of the restored buildings.  I suggest taking a walk along the wharf where the island’s monthly delivery ship unloads supplies, or visiting some of the pristine beaches to swim, snorkel, scuba dive. You can go out fishing or even try a trip on a glass bottom boat.

I visited Two Chimney winery for wine tasting and whilst there sampled their stunning platters of local products.  The food is to die for. Infact, the island boasts many outstanding restaurants such as Dino’s at Bumboras, and Hilli Restaurant both which we sampled.

There is a good selection of shopping on the island too. Much of it duty free! The main street is the best for this, and shoes were a popular choice with the girls! There is even some nightlife on the island too.
